Chaz Bell, known by most as Slug Christ, has been hailed as one of the most prolific, versatile, and influential underground artists in modern independent music. One of the original and most recognized members of the Atlanta hip-hop collective Awful Records (among the likes of Abra, Father, Playboi Carti, Tommy Genesis, & others), his body of work surely speaks for itself. With an extensive and vast catalog of singles, mixtapes, EP’s, and full-length albums, he has worked with the likes of Playboi Carti, Father, $uicideboy$, Lil Peep, and so many more. After taking a break to release a coffee table art book and perform soundtrack scoring for films (including a documentary about Steph Curry), Slug has returned with his most outstanding and most eclectic album to date, “PLANT MENTALITY 4”.
The album is the result of a dynamic compilation of instrumental experimentation, complicated and personal subject matter, intricate production, and visual art accompaniment, culminating into an album that bares all to his long-standing cult following. Touching on the subjects of spirituality, existentialism, past drug use, current sobriety, love, loss, and trying to survive an ever-chaotic universe, Slug Christ always keeps the subject matter relatable and accessible for every listener, even if at times abstract. This has always been a primary focus, letting the rest of the best of us know that we are not alone. These messages, syncopated over some of the most ground-breaking and interesting production approaches makes for what could be the most intriguing records of 2024. This can be demonstrated on the first music video release from the album for the tranquilly alluring song, “All Used Up.” Produced solely by Slug Christ, the artwork is also completely created by him, rounding out his exhibition and solidifying him as an unstoppable audio and visual force.
