Out of the dank confines of the punk squat known as the Fortress comes AJ Suede. The emcee/producer, who originated from East Harlem, NY and Stroudsburg, PA has amassed over twenty independent releases to his name (including four full-lengths). Among his credits is work with the likes of Antwon, Keyboard Kid (Lil B) and Crimewave as well as sharing stages with artists as diverse as Lil Uzi Vert to full-on grindcore and metal bands.
A trip to Seattle earlier this year to link up with producer/musician Wolftone turned into the forthcoming full-length Gotham Fortress. The album is propelled by a dizzying display of dark toned soundscapes that seem to bear influence between trap, witch house and goth sources. Suede’s smoke filled voice cavity delivers both self-knowledge and somber atmospherics throughout.
Speaking on the results Suede said “initially I was coming to Seattle for a few weeks to work on some tracks. Instead I ended up crashing on Wolftone’s couch for five months. He lives in this punk house they call the Fortress that throws basement shows constantly. It was a great energy and we would feed off each other instead of working on our parts separately. As a hip-hop listener I am into bodies of work instead of singles and we worked on capturing that flow through the album.”
Also adding to the mix is collabos with DoNormaal, RVN, youngster jiji, Crimewave, Pest, and additional beats by Brakebill, Rozz Dyliams and Spaceghostpurrp (Raider Klan, A$AP Rocky).
